Edward John BURROW
(1869 - 1935)
Edward John BURROW, FRGS[1] was born in 1869 in Wellington, Somerset[2] to James, a watchmaker and Lydia Burrow. Edward attended Cheltenham College, Gloucesteshire, as a boarder. He married Alice Elizabeth FILDES in 1891[3].
Edward and Alice had the following children:
- Beatrice Millar BURROW, b. 1893, Cheltenham[4] m. Neville SIDAWAY in 1925[5], d. 18 Aug 1977.
- Dorothea May BURROW, b. 1897, Cheltenham[6] m. William George DEAKIN 10 Aug 1918, d. 3 Jul 1966, Cheltenham.
In the 1901 Census, Edward is recorded as living with his wife, Alice (aged 32 years), Beatrice aged 8 years and Dorothea aged 3, at St John's Gardens, Cheltenham with one servant (Jane CRUSE).
Edward trained as a chemist and pharmacist but is well known for his etchings and publishing company which he founded in Cheltenham in the 1900s with a community of 350 artists, writers and printers' craftsmen on a profit sharing basis. By the 1920s, his publishing firm was known as E.J. Burrow and Co. Ltd.
Edward was an eminent British Rotarian and in 1928, Edward and Alice gifted an organ to Cheltenham Town Hall in Imperial Square.
Edward died on 19th September 1934, aged 66 years.
Edward's obituary appeared in The Times on Friday 20th September 1935: "Mr E.J. Burrow, Etcher, Artist and Archaeologist, died yesterday at Cheltenham aged 6. Born Jun 8 1869, son of James Burrow of Wellington, Somerset, went to school there, was for 7 years a chemist and pharmacist."
